A brief write up by Arun Padmanabha Rao regarding his meeting with HH Sri Uthradam Thirunal Marthanda Varma, the last titular Maharaja of Travancore a few months before he passed away on 16^th Dec 2013.

Return Gift from a Maharaja

महराजाकडून एक प्रति-आहेर

During our visit to Trivandrum in June 2013 Gita & self decided to call on His Highness Sri Utharadam Thirunal Marthanda Varma, the titular Maharaja of Travancore, to pay our respects to him. I rang up the Secretary to H H for fixing up an appointment, informing my identity as great great grandson of Diwan T. Rama Row who had served as Diwan of Travancore from 1887 to 1892. Within a few minutes I got a call from him confirming the appointment the very next day at 3.30pm, naturally with the approval of H H. Carrying a big basket full of fresh fruits from Big Bazar, we reached Pattam Palace, the residence of H H at 3.15pm the next day. The secretary directed us to the “inner hall”, where H H receives “family friends”. There are various halls for various type of visitors such as Ministers, Govt officials, Foreign dignitaries, Press reporters, Family friends etc. At 3.30 sharp the simple down to earth head of Travancore Royal family walked into the hall greeting us with folded hands, requesting us to sit in the sofa even before he occupied his chair. We felt honoured and at the same time our regards & respects towards H H multiplied many folds observing the 92 years old personification of humility being so kind to us by his words and actions. It was obvious that humility is a sign of virtue and not a sign of weakness. ​His Highness gracefully accepted the fruits basket from Gita and thanked her for the same. He remembered Bapa, Seenu kaka and enquired about the welfare of our sister Asha & her husband Arun whom he knows very well. H H was keen to know about all the other members of “Hill View” Family. Since there were many more appointments for him on that day, after 15 minutes of interaction we tried to take leave of him. He requested us to sit down and asked his PA to bring two beautiful pictures of Sree Padmanabhaswamy to be presented to us.   In addition, by way of a “return gift" he handed over to Gita an unique picture of Sree Krishna with 8 hands, photographed by himself. This photograph was earmarked to be presented to His Holiness Sri Shankaracharya of Sringeri who was expected to visit Trivandrum. When Gita tried to return the photo to H H, he said “It is presented to you.” Even though H H told us that Sree Krishna idol is in Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple we could not locate it. A renowned architect & history buff of Trivandrum feels that the golden statue may be part of the recently discovered temple treasure as he has also never seen it. ​As we were taking leave of him he enquired as to how we came and whether he can arrange for a vehicle for us to go back to the hotel where we were staying. Thanking him profusely, we informed him that we had engaged a taxi for this visit. While seeing us off he requested us to visit without fail the “Sree Utharadam Thirunal Marthanda Varma Chitralayam” at Rangavilasam palace which was recently opened for public by him. This Chitralayam houses H H's personal collection of restored frozen photo frames from Travancore history. Next day by the time we reached Rangavilasam palace it was lunch break and it was closed. We met the Manager in charge and told him that we were directed by H H to visit Chitralayam. He immediately opened the doors of Chitralayam and explained to us in detail the history behind the photographs displayed there.​ Before boarding the train that night to Chennai I rang up the Secretary and requested him to convey our sincere thanks to HH, one of the finest personalities I have ever met. HH's return-gift of the photo of the eight- armed golden Krishna will adorn our house as a prized possession. But a priceless return gift that will remain for ever in our hearts and minds is the impression of a gentle soul with dignity and grace.

गीता अणी मी 2013 जून महिनेंत॑ अनंतशयनाला गेल्होत॑तेम्हा त्रावन्कोर महराजा श्री उत्राडम तिरुनाळ मार्तांड वर्माला अमच॑ आदरांजलि कळिवाला म्हणून त्यांस मिळाला निश्चय करलों. 1887 पसून 1892 पर्यंतीन त्रावन्कोर राज्याच दिवाणविणी होतत॑ टी. रामरावाच नातूच नातू मी म्हणून फोण मुखांतर परिचय देऊन, महराजाच सेक्रटरीला अमच॑ इच्छा कळिवलों. नंखरेच वेळांत, म्हणजे, दोन तीन निमिषांतेच सेक्रटरीकडून फोण आल॑. याच दिवसी साडे-तीन घंटेला महराजा अम्हाला भेटतील म्हणून कळिवले.​ पुढच दिवसी बिग-बॅस्कटांतून घेट्लत॑ एक थोर बुट्टीच फळ-पंडू उचलींगून अम्ही पट्टम राजवाडाला बरोर सव्वा-दोन बडिवताना जाऊन पावलों. उद्योगस्थ॑, मंत्रिलोक॑, विदेशांतून आलतेनी, पत्रकार, राजकुटुंबाच मित्रलोक॑ अस॑ अस॑ वेगळे वेगळे लोकांस स्वीकार करून बसिवाला म्हणून राजवाडाच आंत प्रत्येक प्रत्येक खोली आहे. राजकुटुंबाच मित्रलोकांस म्हणून होतत॑ आंतल॑ एक खोलींत सेक्रटरी अम्हास बलाईंगून गेले. बरोर साडे-तीन बडिवताना महराजा अम्ही बसल्होतत॑ खोलीच आंत वेघून आले. दोन हातीन जोडींगून नमस्कार करत, त्रावन्कोर राजकुटुंबाच प्रमुख अम्हाला स्वीकार करून, स्वता कुर्सी व॑र बसाच पुढेच अम्हाला सेटिव॑र बसाला विचारींगट्ले. 92 वर्ष वयेच महराजाच विनय वाग, सौम्य गोष्ट, तसेच त्यंच फार सरळ स्वभाव हे अग्गीन पाव्हून त्यंच व॑र अम्हाला होतत॑ मर्यादा अतिगुण॑ वाढल॑. विनय स्वभाव एकलांस शोभा देत॑ विना, त्यंच उणविता दाखिवत नाही म्हणाच्याला संदेहेच नाही.  ​गीता देलते पंडूच आहेर धन्य समेत स्वीकार करून त्यंच धन्यसंतोष कळिवले. अमच॑ बापा अणी सीनु-काका ह्यंच विषयीन सये करींगट्ले. तसेच, अमच॑ बहिणी आशा अणी मेव्हणा अरूणाच विषयीनीं विचारले. अमच॑ "Hill-View" कुटुंबाच दुसर॑ सगळ्याचीन क्षेम विचारले. ​ते दिवसी महराजांस अण्खीन वेगळ॑ भरून लोकांस मिळाच आहे म्हणून पंध्रा निमिषाच वेळ होतांतरून निघतों म्हणून अम्ही कळिवलों. अण्खीन थोडक वेळ बसा म्हणून अम्हाला सांगून, श्री पद्मनाभस्वामीच दोन सुंदर पेट आणून अम्हास द्याला त्यंच पीएला आज्ञा करले. हेज विना प्रति-आहेर म्हणून स्वता तेनीच काढलते आठ हाताच सोनेच श्रीकृष्णाच एक फोटो गीताला देले. थोडक दिवसांत त्यांस मिळाला येणार म्हणून होतत॑ श्रिंगेरी श्री शंकराचार्याला देम॑ म्हणून हे फोटा काढून ठिवल्होते म्हणून अम्हास कळ्ळकी-नाही, ते पर्तून देलों तरीन "नको, तुम्हालाच असूनदे, तुम्हीच ठींगा" म्हणट्ले. श्री क्रूष्णाच ते विग्रह श्री पद्मनाभस्वामि देऊळाच आंत आहे म्हणून तेनी अम्हाला सांगिट्ले तरीन तिकड अम्हाला ते पाह्याल झाल नाही. हे सोनेच प्रतिमा अत्ता पर्यंतीन त्यंच दृष्टी व॑र पडल॑ नाही, थोडक वर्षापुढे मिळ्ळते क्षेत्र-खजानाच भाग असूया ते म्हणून अनंतशयनाच एक प्रसिद्ध वास्तुशास्त्र अणी चरित्र पंडित अम्हाला सांगिट्ले. ​"तुम्ही कस आलांत, पर्तून जायाला बंडीच व्यवस्था करून देऊका" म्हणून महराजा विचारले. "नको, उदंड धन्यवाद, टॅक्सीच व्यवस्था अम्ही केलोहें" म्हणून सांगून अम्ही तिकडून उतरलों. "सर्वजन दर्शनाकरतां अत्ता अत्ता मी रंगविलासम-महलांत उद्घाटन केलते श्री उत्राडम तिरुनाळ मार्तांड वर्म चित्रालयम विसरनास्क पावा" म्हणून निघाच वेळी अम्हाला सांगिट्ले. पुनरुद्धारण केलते फोटो-संग्रहावाटे त्रावन्कोर चरित्राच दृश्य-विवरण इकड॑ प्रदर्शाला ठिवलाहेत॑. पुढच दिवसी अम्ही रंगविलासम-महल जाऊन पावताना, दुपारच॑ जेवणेच वेळ म्हणून ते झांकून होत॑. चित्र-संग्रहालय सुटनास्क पाव्हूनच सराम म्हणून अम्हाला महराजा प्रतेकविणी सांगून पाठिवले म्हणून तिकडल॑ मॅनेजराला सांगतांतरून, कवाड उघडून आंत बलाईंगून गेले. एक एक चित्राचीन इतिहास विशद होऊन अम्हाला कळिवले. ​तद्दि रात्री चेन्नै ट्रेन धराच पुढे अमच॑ अपार कृतज्ञता महराजाला कळिवांत म्हणून सेक्रटरीला मी फोण करून सांगिट्लों. ​​प्रति-आहेर म्हणून अम्हाला देलते आठ-हाताच कृष्णाच पेट एक श्रेष्ट वस्तुविणी अमच॑ घराला शोभा देईल. पण, विनय अणी सौम्यशील स्वभावच एक पुण्यात्माच अन्मोल सये अमच॑ मनांतीन हृदयांतीन कद्दीन राह्यील.
