I do not recollect when my fascination with Tranquebar started. But I know why. It was the name. As a school boy I was always fascinated with maps. On one I saw, I do not recollect when, Tranquebar marked by the seashore on the Bay of Bengal. What a name! Why this foreign sounding name on Indian shores ? Well, in Tamil Tharangampadi means "singing waves". What a beatiful and poetic name !  It become the Trankebar of the Danes and thence to Tranquebar. On a French map of the Coromandel of Jan 1753 it is marked as Trankembar. But the French never held Tranquebar. The Danes (ie, of Denmark, not the Dutch of Holland) built a trading post here during 1620 and later expanded it to a fort with guns facing the sea. Cut to the present. In April 2011 we were returning back to Chennai from a trip to Shrimushnam and on a whim,  thought of visiting Tranquebar, which was on the way. And what a nice decision it turned out to be !  Entry to Dansborg Fort Driving into the Tranquebar fort was like driving into freeze-framed history. The place has been restored and kept tourist-friendly by the Govt of Denmark. Sitting on the parapets of the fort, facing the sea we lost track of time, thanks to the melody of the singing waves. It was King Raghunath Nayak of Tanjore who allowed the Danes in 1620 to set up their trading post in Tharangampadi under a treaty. The Danes continued to make the annual payments to the Marathas after they took over the kingdom in 1675. There is a much more important connection. Rev Schwartz of Tranqurbar was mainly responsible to mentoring Prince Serfoji for his role as the future King of Tanjore. Rev  Gericke of Madras and he ensured that the young Serfoji was exposed at an early age to modern European languages and science. Serfoji was thus able to mix this western knowledge with traditional Indian heritage and provide an ideal rule to his subjects. He was a polyglot, being   proficient in Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Sanskrit and English besides being familiar with French, German, Danish, Italian, Dutch and Latin. He was also a bibliophile and spared no efforts in collecting rare books. His efforts to develop the Tanjore Saraswati Mahal Library was instrumental in that library becoming world famous. Silent gun & Singing waves No more examples need to be cited to show the deep links between Tranquebar and Dakshini Marathi.

त्रांकुबार मोह कद्दी पसून मला आल॑, हे मला कळ्ना. पण कां ते आल॑, हे कळेल॑. नाव, हेच. साळेंत वाचताना पसून भूचित्र पाह्याला मला फार अवडत होत॑. कद्दी म्हणून कळना, एक भूचित्रांत॑ बंगाळ उप-समुद्राच कांठशी  त्रांकुबार दिसल॑. कसलत॑ नाव ! भारतांत॑ असलत॑ परदेशाच गोष्टाच नाव कां आल॑ ? तमिल भाषांत॑ तरंगमपाडी म्हणजे "लाटाच गाणे" अस॑ अर्थ. किती सुंदर नाव ! डेन्मार्काच भाषांत॑ "त्रन्कबार" झाल॑, नंतर॑ "त्रांकुबार" झाल॑. जॅनुवरी 1753च एक फ्रेन्च भूचित्रांत॑ "त्राम्कमबार" म्हणून आहे. पण, त्रांकुबार कद्दीन फ्रान्साच अधीनात आल नाही. इसवी 1620 वर्षी डेन-लोक॑ (म्हणजे डेन्मार्कच॑, हॉलंडाच डच नोहो) इकडे एक वाणिज्य-ठाणा बांधून नंतर॑, ते विस्तार करून किल्ला बांधले ; किल्लाच तोफ समुद्र पटीस करून. अत्ता या, एकवीसवां शतकाला. थोड वर्षाच पुढे अम्ही श्रीमुष्णम अणी पांडिचेरीला जाऊन चेन्नैला वापस येत होतों. अकस्मात वाटल॑, त्रांकुबाराला गेलतर॑ काय, वाटेंतेच की आहे, म्हणून. बरोरल॑ निश्चय काढलों ! त्रांकुबार किल्लाच आंत बंडी वेघिवताना इतिहासाच चित्र-पटांत वेघास्क॑ होत॑. विनोदयात्रींच॑ सौकर्याला पह्जत॑ व्यवस्था अग्गीन डेन्मार्क सरकार बरोर करून ठिवलाहेत॑.समुद्राच समोर किल्लाच वरच॑ अडभिंतांत बसून लाटाच गाणे ऐकत वेळ गेलत॑ कळ्ळेच नाही. Danish Governor's residence, now a museum त्रांकुबारालीन दक्षिणी मराठीलीन काय संबंध ? भरून आहे, महत्वाच पणीन. सांगतों. रघुनाथ नायक तंजावूर राज कराच वेळी, म्हणजे इसवी 1620 वर्षी डेन्मार्कांतून आलत॑ वाणिज्य-कंपनीला तरंगमपाडींत॑ त्यंच सौकर्या करतान एक ठिकाण करार करून देले.  इसवी 1675 वर्षांत॑ तंजावूर मराठांच अधीनांत आलत॑ वेळ पसून वर्षावर्षी हे करार-पत्राच अनुसार मिळामत॑ रोक्कम मराठांस॑ मिळत गेल॑. Inside the Fort हेजपक्षा थोर विषय एक आहे. भविष्यांत॑ तंजावूर गादीव॑र बसणार राजकुमार सरफोजी यांस॑ राज-पदवीच आवश्यानुसार शिक्षण अणी हित-उपदेश मिळाला मुख्य कारण त्रांकुबारच॑ रेवरंड श्वार्ट्ज़ हेनीच होते. हेनी अणी मद्रासच॑ रेवरंड गेरिक सरफोजीला आधुनिक पाश्चात्य भाषा अणी शास्त्र-ज्ञानाच परिचय बाळपणातूनेच देले. पाश्चात्य ज्ञान अणी स्वदेश संस्कृतीच वारस हे दोनांचीन तुल्य मिश्रण करून  सरफोजीराजे तंजावूरला एक श्रेष्ठ अणी मातृका राजभार देले. सरफोजीराजे मराठी, हिंदी, तमिल, तेलुगु, उर्दू, संस्कृत अणी इंग्लीष भाषाच निपुण होते अणी  फ्रेन्च, जर्मन, डॅनिश, इटालियन, डच अणी लॅटिन हे भाषाच परिचय पणीन होत॑ त्यांस॑. सरफोजी राजे पुस्तक-प्रेमी पण होते. तंजावूर सरस्वती महाल ग्रंथालयांत॑ अनेक अप्रूप पुस्तकें हेनी मिळिवून ठिवले अणी त्यामळे आज ते ग्रंथालय लोक-प्रसिद्ध झालाहे. त्रांकुबारालीन दक्षिणी मराठीलीन मध्ये असाच अगाध संबंधाला वेगळ॑ उदाहरण काहीनेच नोको म्हणूया.  Sea view from the Fort
