The Napier Museum, Trivandrum, was
established in 1855. In 1874, the old building was demolished and a new
building in Indo-Saracenic style was commissioned. The new building was named after Lord Napier who was the Governor of Madras from
1866-1872. This architectural masterpiece was designed by Robert
Chisholm, the consulting Architect of the Madras Government. The
construction of the new building was completed in 1880.
The Sree Chitra Art
Gallery and The Natural History Section are housed in two separate buildings
in this complex. The main attraction in Sree Chitra Art Gallery is the large
collection of paintings by Raja Ravi Varma who was a prince from Kilimanoor
family which was associated through marriage links with the Travancore royal
family.
The Natural History
Section contains a rare and priceless table made from polished under-sea rock
sediment containing fossilized remains of marine creatures, millions of years
old. The Dakshini Marathi link to this table is as follows.
The table was presented to Rao Saheb Udarasiromani T. Padmanabha Rao (son of T. Rama Row who served as Diwan of Travancore from 1887 to 1892.) by an English nobleman during his visit to Trivandrum in early 1900s. It remained with the family till 1938. Being a rare and unique item, the family thought it will be a better proposition to make it available for public exhibition rather than allowing it to be a family heirloom, with no open access to the public for viewing it. The table was gifted to the Napier Museum by P. Krishnaswamy Rao, Padmanabha Rao’s son in 1938. |
